What is Lumia?
Lumia is a modular, safety tiling system designed to reduce the risk of injury resulting from a patient fall. Through conducting primary research and refining secondary research, we at Forj have identified where and when patients are most likely to fall.
Patients, particularly older males, are most likely to fall when getting up during the night to use the restroom. Maintaining independence is incredibly important to these patients, and because of this they are unlikely to call for help.
Patient falls result in loss of time for health care providers, as well as costly tests that are necessary to perform. Because patient falls occur under the hospital “never events” these costs are not reimbursed by insurance companies. Reducing “never events” are top priority for many hospitals as they both reduce costs and improve the image of the hospital.
Lumia reduces the risk of injury should a fall occur, as well as provide an illuminated, cushioned path for patients to follow to the restroom in the night. Lumia also incorporates a wireless alarm that will alert the nursing staff that a patient is up and out of bed. This system is modular and scalable to fit any hospital or health care setting.
Lumia will decrease the severity of falls and increase the comfort of the patients stay while in the hospital.
